Fauzya Alarakhiya, Weston Ambassadors Staff Advisor
"The Weston Ambassadors are a school based service club whose main objective is to provide service within the school and the Weston community in order to foster a sense of identity, belonging and to foster the spirit of community citizenship. The Ambassadors were first established in 2010 and have collectively performed hundreds of thousands of community service hours as each member contributes anywhere from 60 to 160 hours an academic year based on what activities they have been involved in.
The Ambassadors have recently partnered up with Trinity Theater to provide peer mentoring workshops to our Grade 9 and 10 students on culturally relevant and timely topics in order to foster a sense of identity and voice amongst the student population and I am very proud of their work and professionalism. More recently, the Ambassadors have created a series of informative and relevant public service announcements to continue their work to build capacity and awareness in the school. As their Staff Advisor, I am very proud of their dedication and commitment to the spirit of service and community citizenship."
Ashnaa Narumathan, Weston Ambassadors' 2021 Chair
“My name is Ashnaa Narumathan, and I have been an ambassador and peer mentor at Weston since the 10th grade. In grade 11, I was given the great privilege of leading as the Co-Chair of Ambassadors and in my final year at Weston I was given the position to be the Chair of Ambassadors.
Through being an Ambassador, I have been able to work with the amazing student leaders in our school and contribute to making our school environment and community inclusive and overall more positive. Through my personal experience, joining ambassadors gave me a sense of empowerment to make a change within my school and step up to become a school leader. As a peer mentor, I’ve been able to connect with the grade 9 students in our school who are going through the same anxieties of coming into a new school and help them feel welcome and more comfortable in their new environment. I’ve also been able to apply the skills I’ve gained as a peer mentor into other clubs in the school and even in my after school jobs when working with kids.
This year (2020 to 2021) due to the COVID-19 pandemic the ambassadors team was unable to continue with peer mentoring sessions. However, Mrs. Alarakhiya and I have come up with a PSA video series which will be filmed by the peer mentors to touch on prevalent topics within our school and community.
Overall, my experience as an Ambassador has allowed me to grow and I hope to carry forward the skills I've gained in my future endeavors.”
